INSPIRATION

Music has played quite a significant role throughout the history of my family, and as a musician myself, it is a pleasure to be continuing this tradition. Having spent many years of my life listening to the music of many great composers always makes me feel intrigued, and gives me a strong desire to keep my artistry going. I started my life listening to composers such as Bach, and the love I have for classical music has remained present ever since. Nowadays, the music of Mozart and Haydn especially gets to me very easily: what stands out the most about them in particular is how they are able to blend an apparent straightforwardness with emotional depth and lyricism - no denying how remarkable of an achievement that is.

My great-great-grandparents, Effie Martyn and Paul Watts, were both classical singers. Martyn was a contralto who trained at the Dresden Conservatory before World War I and specialised in singing oratorios such as Messiah or Elijah, frequently singing at the Royal Albert Hall. Watts was an operatic baritone who sang with the Covent Garden chorus under the baton of Sir Thomas Beecham. Being a classical singer myself, it is a great privilege to know that I am following in the footsteps of some of my ancestors.

Outside of the classical field, I find inspiration from listening to many historical rock artists such as the Beatles, the Talking Heads, ABBA or the Bee Gees. Their music may be in a different league from mine, but they should be given credit for the impact they have had on the world, and the influence they have had on some of today's modern artists. Ever since I was first introduced to these performers, I have maintained a constant admiration for them that won't be dying down any time soon.

I also feel grateful to my family, teachers and comrades I have had over the years for the amount of support and encouragement they have given me. Even with all of the problems that we have gone through, it has always remained there, and if it wasn't for the esteem I never would have gotten as far as I have now.
